Mom's Story

Cowan - Dusty's Mother
Moms Don't
Give Up
Seems like
yesterday and yet over 40 years have passed sense the doctor said
it's a boy! When you are young and starting a family life is good. At
two there was a praying little boy praying over everything and
already realizing who God is. I promised God if He would give me a
boy I would give him back to Him so I knew before his birth that he
was God's. Then from the time of little boy soon there was a young
teen that said take me to church tonight God is going to fill me with
the Holy Spirit. I took him to a revival meeting that night and the
pastor lined all the young people down the isle of the church and
when he touched the first child every one in the isle fell under
God's power and was filled with the Holy Spirit. Dusty would have his
brothers' sit on a large 4 piece sectional and preach to them. Life
seemed so good then. Too bad life can't stay as it was when it is good.
Many years
passed and many prayers went up for Dusty and his 3 brothers. There
was so many hurts during that time he had a wife that died at 19,
leaving 2 children 8 months and 2 years old. Dusty seemed to go off
the deep end and I was the mom to his 2 children. I kept praying and
believing. He joined bands and traveled, he loved music but it wasn't
the music he had been taught at home. He finally gave up on that and
opened a body shop and was great at repairing cars but he was not happy.
God began
waking me up in the night to pray for Dusty. I prayed many, many
hours for him. I didn't know he was into drugs and when I would go to
his place of business and confront him about God waking me up to
pray. He would get so mad and say he was not doing anything except
working. Well it wasn't long before the D.E.A. came in and arrested
him for drug trafficking in several counties and he was facing a 20
years to life prison term.
At that time
I thought I would die. I work in jail and prison ministry and I see
the broken hearts of moms and dads who love their children so much
and watch them throw their lives away through drugs and bad living.
The pain is so bad and you relive your own life over and over and try
to figure out what you did wrong as a parent. You would gladly give
your own life if they would set your child free. Any way after a year
of court over and over and all of Dustys so called friends turning
against him to save themselves he was given 10 years in Federal
Prison and you do 85% of your time in a federal offense. Dusty told
me that when he was in jail that he cried out to God and God saved
him and it would be alright, but at that time I couldn't see that
even though I had asked God for years to save Dusty no matter the cost.
Aren't we
weird creatures? We pray God save my child however you want,
just don't let him die lost and then when God doesn't do what we want
it doesn't please us? I guess I thought an angel would fly down and
Dusty would see the light. No way!
God tells us
that our ways are not His ways so when you pray for Gods way get
ready. Through the years in Federal Prison Dusty became so tuned in
to God, His ways, His love, His calling.
Through
miracles God shortened his time to 6 years instead of 10 and the day
I picked him up at Leavenworth Federal Prison I saw men on the yard
that told me how they had been saved and influenced by the word God
had given him.
He is now the
head of "Life After Meth Ministries" and does lots of jail
and prison ministry.
Moms don't
give up on your kids. Pray, pray, pray for them and thank God when
the answer comes. God is not willing that any should perish but that
all would find eternal life. Don't ever get weary praying for your
children every prayer brings them closer to serving God. Stand in the
gap for them speak positive things over their lives whether they are
in prison or out there somewhere in the world on drugs or what ever.
Say positive things about their lives. For I know the thoughts that I
think toward you said the Lord thoughts of peace and not of evil to
give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11 God has the best in mind for
all of us whether we are the addicted or someone who loves the
addicted. He does not give up on us like we sometime give up on each other.
Peace I leave
with you my peace I give you not like the world gives; give I unto
you let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid. John 14:27
If you have
turmoil in your life know that it is not from God. He will give you
peace in the worst of situations. Always pray and believe God to
bring you through.
For I know
the thoughts I think toward you saith the Lord thoughts of peace not
evil to give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11
God wants
peace for you whether you are addicted or the family of the addicted.
Keep your mind on the answer "Jesus." Speak His name over
and over. If you can't say anything else just say help me.
When you are
in trouble ask God to guide you. Let go of your pride and willful
ways turn your life to Him He is standing at the door of your heart.
The knob is on the inside will you open it and ask Him in?
